Ever wondered what lies deep beneath the surface of the world’s largest freshwater lake? On Sunday, September 14th at 3:00 PM ET, you’ll have the rare chance to find out live!
For the first time, this underwater mountain, rising 300 metres from the lakebed, will be explored live using the Boxfish Luna ROV, showcasing both the extraordinary biodiversity of Lake Superior and the ROV’s ability to operate in challenging, low-light environments.
The livestream, hosted aboard the Research Vessel Blue Heron, brings together award-winning filmmakers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick form Inspired Planet Productions, along with freshwater ecologist Dr. Michael Rennie. Together, they’ll guide viewers through a rarely seen deepwater world featuring sheer volcanic cliffs, ancient geological formations, and elusive species such as giant lake trout, the striking redfin, and the deepwater sculpin.
With the Boxfish Luna’s low-light 4K imaging system and precise manoeuvrability, scientists and audiences alike can see environments that have remained hidden until now. The mission also highlights how remotely operated vehicles support environmental monitoring by enabling safe, non-intrusive exploration.
The expedition seeks to answer a fundamental ecological question: Is Superior Shoal to freshwater life what seamounts are to ocean life — critical refuges of abundance and biodiversity?
By streaming live, the project not only contributes to scientific knowledge but also invites the public to engage directly with ongoing research.
This is the first in a series of live events under the new project by Inspired Planet Productions “Hidden Below: The Freshwater World”. Each livestream offers real-time discoveries, connecting science, technology, and public outreach like never before!
